Bitcoin : Symbiosis recovers 15 BTC after the hacking of its bridge
Inter-chain liquidity protocol Symbiosis has managed to recover approximately 15 Bitcoin (valued at around $1.15 million) following an exploit targeting its Bitcoin bridge on September 11. The security incident allowed the attacker to exploit a vulnerability on BNB Chain via the Symbiosis BridgeV2 contract, generating roughly 46.1 billion unbacked syBTC tokens. Despite the massive theoretical token issuance, actual losses remained limited, with the exploiter only extracting around $336,000 by selling 4.39 WBTC on Uniswap v4. In response to the exploit, Symbiosis suspended its native Bitcoin bridge service and isolated the affected infrastructure, while other network routes across EVM, TRON, and TON remained operational. To maintain trading capabilities, the protocol restored Bitcoin swaps through third-party integrations with Chainflip and THORChain. Furthermore, Symbiosis offered a 20% bounty to recover the remaining stolen assets and announced it is developing a compensation framework for impacted liquidity providers. The event underscores ongoing security vulnerabilities in cross-chain bridge protocols, highlighting the gap between inflated synthetic token minting and actual extracted liquidity.
