Bitcoin OG Says He Is Watching for Next Major Exploit as AI Models Get Stronger

Longtime Bitcoin figure CobraBitcoin has issued a warning regarding emerging cybersecurity threats to Bitcoin and crypto infrastructure, driven by rapidly advancing artificial intelligence models. The warning emphasizes that because significant portions of Bitcoin's critical infrastructure, including Bitcoin Core, Lightning implementations, wallets, and supporting libraries, are open-source, they are susceptible to automated, machine-speed analysis and vulnerability discovery by autonomous AI systems. The alert follows advancements in frontier AI systems, such as OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1, designed for autonomous long-horizon software engineering. Astra notably scored 100% on the ExploitBench benchmark and 42.4% on ExploitGym, achieving OpenAI's 'Critical' cybersecurity threshold by demonstrating the ability to independently discover novel flaws and construct functional exploits. In response to mounting security risks illustrated by past incidents across the ecosystem—including a critical flaw discovered in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool and wallet hardware security concerns—developers have formed the Bitcoin Red Team. This group uses AI tools alongside human audits to proactively scan and protect open-source codebases from potential machine-generated exploits.
