Bitcoin Core Contributor Flags Near-Vanishing Payments at El Salvador's Bitcoin Beach

A longtime Bitcoin Core contributor, Jon Atack, has highlighted a significant decline in everyday Bitcoin transactions at El Zonte, the Salvadoran coastal hub famously known as Bitcoin Beach. During a recent visit, restaurant staff informed Atack that his payment was the first Bitcoin transaction processed at the venue that entire month, a stark contrast to previous years when cryptocurrency payments occurred regularly. Furthermore, an employee declined a tip in satoshis, noting that card and cash payments have largely supplanted crypto transactions among patrons. The grassroots initiative in El Zonte, which launched around 2019, played a pivotal role in inspiring El Salvador's historic decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. However, the apparent drop in merchant transaction volume illustrates persistent challenges in establishing Bitcoin as a routine medium of exchange. Observers note that users increasingly treat Bitcoin as an appreciating store of value rather than a spending currency, disincentivizing daily transactional use despite favorable local regulations and infrastructure.
