Big Tech's Personal AI Agents Are Coming for the to-Do List
Google and Meta are building integrated personal AI agents—Google’s “Remy” inside Gemini and Meta’s “Hatch” inside Instagram—that run in the background to complete tasks and anticipate user needs. Their apps give them distribution and cost advantages over third-party projects like OpenClaw, which reached ~3.2 million users but faced usability and pricing limits after Anthropic restricted flat-rate access. Google folded its prior Mariner experiment into Remy (May 4) and may detail plans at its developer conference later this month. Meta plans internal testing of Hatch by end of June and is layering shopping features to compete with TikTok Shop. Market impact: these moves strengthen incumbent Big Tech platforms (benefiting GOOG.OQ and other ecosystem players), could displace smaller agent startups dependent on third-party compute, and create new commerce integrations for apps like DoorDash and Etsy that may see increased frictionless transaction volume.
