Base and Ethereum collaboration on account abstraction breaks down, leaving two competing standards
Collaboration between Coinbase's Layer 2 network Base and Ethereum core developers to establish a unified native account abstraction standard has broken down, according to Derek Chiang, founder of ZeroDev. As reconciliation talks concluded without consensus, both development groups are now independently pursuing separate Ethereum Improvement Proposals: Base with EIP-8130, and Ethereum Layer 1 with EIP-8141 (known as Frame Transactions). The divergence stems from differing architectural priorities between the two ecosystems. Ethereum Layer 1 developers are prioritizing censorship resistance, post-quantum readiness, and value capture via EIP-8141, targeted for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. Conversely, Base and the broader OP Stack ecosystem prioritize scalability and customization, with EIP-8130 claiming up to a 63% reduction in gas costs for certain transaction types relative to current ERC-4337 standards. While this split presents immediate hurdles for infrastructure builders who must now accommodate fragmented wallet and smart contract interfaces, analysts suggest that parallel innovation could deliver specialized solutions suited to the distinct requirements of Layer 1 mainnets and Layer 2 rollups.
