Anthropic's IPO Is Coming. Here's What That Means for S&P 500 Investors.

Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) expected in late 2026, targeting a valuation of $2 trillion or more. If achieved, this would surpass Space Exploration Technologies as the largest IPO in history. While market participants are closely watching the event, index funds tracking the S&P 500 will not be able to immediately add the stock. Standard index inclusion rules require companies to maintain at least 12 months of public trading history, a minimum 10% public float, and reported positive GAAP earnings, delaying any potential inclusion until late 2027. Despite the delay in direct index inclusion, S&P 500 investors already possess indirect exposure through major tech constituents. For instance, Amazon reported $16.8 billion in pretax gains from its Anthropic holding in the first quarter of 2026, while Alphabet also maintains a significant stake. However, market analysts caution that IPOs historically face sharp volatility and underperformance over three-year periods. Because AI equities drove over 80% of the S&P 500's year-to-date gains through mid-May, any post-IPO weakness could dampen broader market sentiment.
