Anthropic has ‘unprecedented’ demand — and it’s leaning on Amazon for support
Amazon announced a new $5 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic, with the option to fund as much as $20 billion more on top of a prior $8 billion commitment. Anthropic will secure up to 5 gigawatts of Amazon’s Trainium chips and has pledged to spend over $100 billion on AWS over the next decade. The deal reinforces Amazon’s role in AI infrastructure, bolstering demand for its custom AI silicon and AWS services and supporting upside for Amazon’s AI-related revenue streams; AMZN traded up about 2.7% in extended trading on the news. The move also highlights industry shifts as AI firms diversify compute suppliers (Broadcom/Google TPU ties were noted), which could have broader implications for chip suppliers and cloud-competition dynamics.
