Another Bitcoin liquidity test arrives with Tuesday's US tax deadline
The approaching US estimated-tax deadline on September 15 is poised to shift liquidity from commercial bank reserves into the Treasury General Account, coinciding with the Federal Reserve's September policy meeting. This significant transfer of cash could place short-term pressure on dollar funding markets and test risk-asset appetite, including Bitcoin liquidity. Commercial bank reserves previously climbed by $96.779 billion to approximately $2.991 trillion for the week ended September 9, while the Treasury's account declined to $883.3 billion, establishing a relatively robust starting position. However, several mitigating factors may offset potential liquidity drains. The US Treasury previously indicated plans to scale down shorter-dated bill auction sizes during September in anticipation of incoming tax receipts. Concurrently, the Federal Reserve's Standing Repo Facility and reserve-management operations provide liquidity backstops against abrupt spikes in repo rates. Market participants will be monitoring short-term funding spreads closely to assess whether liquidity constraints materialize and adversely impact cryptocurrency sentiment.
