Analysts Say September Bitcoin ETF Inflows Reflect Basis Trading Over Bullish Conviction

Substantial inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds reflect market-neutral arbitrage rather than direct bullish conviction from institutional investors, according to analysts and digital asset manager CoinShares. In September, global crypto products attracted $4.53 billion, with U.S. funds taking in $4.44 billion. Bitcoin led flows with $2.84 billion, followed by Ether with $946 million and Zcash with $284 million. BlackRock's IBIT captured over 53% of inflows, driven largely by institutional basis trades capturing a roughly 6% spread against futures, alongside rotating capital into blockchain equities.
