American Express and IBM Drag the Dow
The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded lower during Wednesday morning trading, declining by 0.2% or 119 points despite the majority of its constituent equities posting gains. The blue-chip index was weighed down predominantly by steep losses in financial and legacy technology heavyweights. American Express served as the single largest drag on the benchmark index, subtracting approximately 43 points from the Dow. In addition, established tech giants IBM and Microsoft applied downward pressure, shaving off 39 points and 20 points respectively. The concentrated weakness among these high-weighting constituents offset broader positive breadth across the rest of the 30-stock index. This index divergence highlights the market impact of the price-weighted methodology of the Dow, where outsized declines in higher-priced shares can pull the entire index into negative territory despite broader underlying market strength.
