Amazon Web Services rebuilds Bedrock in 76 days with just six engineers

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has rebuilt the core inference engine behind its flagship AI service, Amazon Bedrock, utilizing a team of just six engineers over a 76-day timeframe. The initiative, designated Project Mantle, was initially estimated to require 30 to 40 engineers working between 12 and 18 months, highlighting massive software development efficiency gains. AWS achieved the accelerated development timeline by leveraging Kiro, Amazon's proprietary agentic coding tool, which generated specifications, code, automated tests, and deployment scripts alongside mandatory human review. The overhaul comes in response to exponential demand growth, with Bedrock processing more tokens in the first quarter of 2026 than in all prior years combined, driven in part by service usage nearly doubling in March 2026. The deployment of the Mantle architecture into live production enhances AWS's capacity to handle heavy generative AI workloads while reducing operational bottlenecks.
