Amazon Signed a Multibillion-Dollar Deal With a 175-Year-Old Glassmaker. Is Fiber the Next AI Bottleneck?
Amazon.com, Inc. has entered into a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement with optical communications specialist Corning Incorporated to supply optical fiber, cabling, and connectivity hardware. The agreement is designed to bolster Amazon's AI infrastructure and data center interconnectivity as the hyperscaler accelerates its annual capital expenditures toward roughly $220 billion. Corning anticipates the contract will support approximately 1,000 jobs in North Carolina, mirroring similar large-scale optical supply deals such as its $6 billion agreement with Meta Platforms. The strategic partnership reflects growing recognition across the technology sector that network connectivity and fiber bandwidth represent critical operational bottlenecks for large-scale AI compute clusters. Accelerators and AI processors require massive data throughput between servers and data center campuses. Securing reliable optical component supply chains allows Amazon Web Services (AWS)—which posted 36.7% revenue growth in Q2—to safeguard deployment timelines and scale capacity efficiently. Institutional interest in Amazon continues to strengthen alongside its infrastructure push, with the number of hedge funds holding AMZN shares rising from 353 to 369 during the second quarter.
