Amazon projects it's on track to deliver nearly 90% of its own US packages
Amazon is projecting significant growth in its proprietary delivery infrastructure, on track to deliver nearly 90% of its own US packages by 2029, according to internal planning documents. The preliminary forecast shows Amazon's in-house delivery network handling 86.3% of its domestic packages in 2027, 87.4% in 2028, and 88.7% in 2029, representing an acceleration from prior estimates. Under the projected plan, Amazon's first-party delivery network will expand to handle roughly 12.2 billion packages in 2027 and reach 15.8 billion packages in 2029 out of a total US package volume of 17.8 billion. A substantial driver of this logistics expansion is its Sub Same-Day network, projected to account for 21.3% of first-party volume by 2029, alongside an expanded rural network backed by over $4 billion in commitments. This aggressive logistics self-reliance further marginalizes traditional parcel carriers. The forecast estimates USPS package share will decline to 8% by 2029, while UPS volume will fall to 1.4% (about 250 million packages annually), and FedEx will manage roughly 0.4%, solidifying Amazon's position as an independent logistics powerhouse.
