Amazon Pledges Over $1 Billion to US Communities to Ease Data Center Backlash
Amazon's cloud unit, AWS, announced plans to invest more than $1 billion over five years in US communities hosting its data centers. The initiative targets areas such as Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, and Mississippi to fund education, workforce training, energy affordability, and environmental programs. The push seeks to alleviate mounting opposition and political scrutiny over power consumption and utility costs as more than 100 data center moratoriums are considered nationwide. Amazon invested $276 billion in data centers between 2011 and 2025 and reaffirmed plans to become water positive by 2030.
