Amazon (AMZN) is About to 6X Its Drone Delivery Footprint to Compete With Rivals Like DoorDash (DASH)
Amazon.com, Inc. has announced plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery operations to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. This represents a sixfold increase from its current 11 operational locations. The service delivers eligible packages weighing up to five pounds in 30 minutes or less, intensifying competition across the automated logistics and quick-commerce space alongside competitors including DoorDash, Uber, and Walmart. The massive rollout is backed by strong financial momentum, following second-quarter results where net sales exceeded $200 billion for the first time and operating income rose 43% to $27.5 billion. However, drone delivery still represents a minor fraction of the company's roughly 20 million daily package deliveries in the U.S., as Amazon directs the bulk of its increased $220 billion full-year capital expenditure toward AWS cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence. The expansion nevertheless highlights Amazon's ongoing push to secure next-generation delivery advantages.
