Altcoins surpass Bitcoin in open interest for the first time since December 2024

For the first time since December 2024, aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures has officially overtaken Bitcoin's, according to Coinalyze data. This structural shift highlights aggressive trader positioning across broader cryptocurrency derivative markets. The market capitalization of altcoins outside the top ten has risen above $200 billion, gaining more than 10% since the start of September, while Bitcoin maintains price stability above the $80,000 threshold. The surge in altcoin derivatives has been underscored by massive single-asset positioning, such as Zcash (ZEC), which saw open interest spike to a record $2.4 billion and sparked $34 million in short liquidations as its price climbed past $1,000. However, analysts caution that historically, when aggregate open interest approaches roughly 4.42% of total market capitalization, market fragility spikes, often preceding sharp liquidation cascades and severe price corrections across mid-cap tokens. While spot buying is participating alongside leverage, the elevated open-interest-to-market-cap ratio presents heightened downside liquidation risks.
