Alphabet-Meta Concentration Anchors Communication Services Outlook
The S&P 500 Communication Services sector is now effectively a concentrated bet on Alphabet and Meta, which together account for roughly 80 percent of sector market cap and 69 percent of earnings. Strong Q1 results and AI-driven growth prompted both companies to slash share repurchases to zero in Q1 2026 after spending $27.9 billion a year earlier, redirecting capital to record capex budgets of $180-190 billion for Alphabet and $125-145 billion for Meta. Investor reaction has diverged, with Alphabet rallying on clearer AI monetization while Meta lagged, leaving the sector trading at a modest 21.6 forward P/E versus the S&P 500.
