CME Group plans to move its cryptocurrency futures and options to 24/7 trading starting May 29, 2026 (pending regulatory review) to align regulated derivatives with continuously trading spot markets. CME’s analysis — using the Parkinson estimator on Bitstamp data — shows weekend volatility remains material (about 75% of weekday levels) and that significant market events have occurred outside weekday sessions, creating gap risk (e.g., a $10,000 Bitcoin futures gap after a $300B spot-cap shock on March 2, 2025). The change aims to eliminate weekend discontinuities, improve risk management and price discovery, and reduce forced liquidations that have driven extreme weekend volatility (notably a $19B liquidation event on Oct 10, 2025 that pushed spot volatility to 7.83%).
